Rping 101
If your reading this then you have taken the first step to becoming a better rper. This series of RP basics can help someone who has been in E Fedding for 1 hour or 1 hundred years. Enough with the intro, lets get to the meat of things!
Character Creation
Ok, so you have decided to become a rper in an E fed, now what? Well, now you have to create your character. The first thing you want to do when creating a character is think about a “gimmick” you want to have for said character. Are you a pirate? A cowboy? A German u Boat captain from WWII with one leg missing? Whatever it is you decide upon be sure to have basic knowledge of said gimmick. If you know nothing about Samoa it does no good to try to become an Island type. As soon as you start to rp people will pick up on your lack of knowledge about your gimmick and pick you apart. So in short, decide on a gimmick you have basic knowledge about or are willing to learn basic knowledge about.
So now you have a gimmick, what is next? You need a name, but not just any name. You need a name that fits your chosen gimmick. Calling yourself Tim O’Reilly and being a Latin Heartthrob makes little sense right? Or calling yourself Johnny Rotten and playing a squeaky clean paperboy is just plain wrong. Think about your gimmick and then pick a name appropiate to your gimmick. If you’re a pirate Captain Rio works. “Big” Jim Fulton sounds like a lumberjack doesn’t it? This is why point 1 about knowing your gimmick is so important. Don’t just pick a name that sounds cool in your head because it just might not work.
You have the gimmick, and the name…your all set right? WRONG! You still need to decide on a hometown. Like with picking a name a hometown can make or break you. Wild Bill Earp with a cowboy gimmick works until you learn he is from Switzerland…because there are no cowboys in Switzerland! Could you imagine Samoa Joe being announced as hailing from…Omaha! Or Steve Austin coming to us live from…Osaka Japan! Your hometown is not your permanent residence but it is where you are from so even if you are a cowboy from Texas you can live in Canada and still be good to go. The other benefit from having a Hometown is being able to play up the hometown angle…Whenever a PPV or Crash TV is in your town or state, or country if you’re a foreigner, then play it up! Even heels like Bret Hart are cheered in their hometown…his was Alberta Canada btw.
Gimmick? Check. Name? Check. Hometown? Check. So, I am ready to begin rping right? Still no, but your almost there. The next thing you need to do is pick a picture base for your character. Another easy descision that people tend to blow because they pick their favorite wrestler of celebrity. Sure Undertaker is cool looking in his old school outfit but that doesn’t make sense if you’re a pirate. Using Ron Simmons also won’t work if your playing a southern redneck white trash type. As I have said before, make it fit!
Alright there is one more simple descion left before you can start your career. Picking a theme song. In case you have missed it let me say it again…make it fit! Your character is a puzzle and each piece needs to fit just right. Using a rock song does nothing for a country boy gimmick. Don’t choose the hot new song just because you like it, pick a theme that fits!
Alright the next few descions are not as damning if you choose wrong but still they are important. Choose if you want to be a heel, face, or a tweener. Then take a second look at your previous choices and think how well they fit now. After that choose what type of wrestler you want to be, whether it’s high flyer or brawler then once more look to see if it all still fits. A 7 foot tall, 300 lb slob from Alabama should not be a high flyer…make it fit!
There you go folks, a quick guide to making a new character in an E Fed…now comes the hard part, rping! Be sure to read the next RP 101 to see “Where should I rp from?”
